History
G.S. Garcia started making cowboy spurs and other related items such as saddles at the age of 19 in California. Trained by the best Mexican artist and blacksmiths, Garcia was soon able to set up his own shop in Elko in Nevada.
Such was the quality of Garcia Spurs that even famous actors such as Will Rogers ordered his wares. The majority of his spurs were sold to the local Vaqueros and cowboys.
Garcia is also famous for making Saddles and has won many awards for his work during the first part of the 20th century.
Identification
Garcia spurs and others influenced by Mexican design are very flamboyant in design and decoration. Often covered with intricate carving, stamping and patterns, the Garcia spurs are easy to spot.
Some items will also come with a certificate of authenticity from the J.M. Capriola Company which is now the owner and manufacturer of Garcia spurs. Although, these items are made more recently and therefore may not be of much interest to collectors.
Look for spurs which are made in the early 1900s.
All of the Garcia spurs will be stamped as GARCIA on the inside of the bands.
