One of the original makers of Cowboy Spurs was a man called August Buermann.
He was born in Germany in 1842 and eventually moved to America where he became one of the Big 3 spur makers of the 19th and 20th Century.
If you are interested in getting some Buermann spurs, then you need to look for the Star brand marking which was his "makers mark". This star design was stamped on to every single pair of his spurs and can usually be found just under the spur strap button or lug.
Buermann eventually sold up the company due to old age and it was bought by another one of the Big 3 spur makers - North and Judd.

I am not sure how your site here works, but, i have a question, seeing your site is related to spurs. I would like to have a book showing the buermann spur collection. I am sticking with collecting buermann spurs because of my granddad. He was a buckaroo in his early yrs., and i have one of his spurs and it’s a buermann goose head. I want to know more about this shape.
Thanks, john
Hi John.
The Goosehead shape just refers to the design of the neck or shank on the spur.
If the neck curves (usually upwards) towards the end, then it is refered to as a goose neck. Imagine a goose’s head and neck and you get the idea.
I think i have found severl pairs of old August Buerman spurs. Just wanted info
I am wondering if anyone can tell me of someone that collects Buermann Gal-leg spurs. My father has had multiple pair of gal-legs that were antiques probably when he purchased them. I know that my father has had them for at least 33 years. He is going to let go one of pair of them along with a Gal-Leg bit. They would be awesome for a collector. Please let me know if you or someone you know might be interested in them.
There are probably plenty of people that would be interested in them but you might be best off selling them on eBay.
I have two pare of hercules bronze spurs. One has hercules bronze pat’d 4-2015 and a stamped star on it the other pair have a star and anchor stamp and hercules bronze on them. Could you tell me more about them and if they are worth anything. They are in good condition. Thanks
I am loving this site, and learning the history of these various spur makers. Thank you!!
I have a question. I own a pair of bronze spurs, with an ivy pattern engraved into the bronze, and a silver button in the center of the outside of each spur. There is a faint North and Judd anchor mark near the heel, but no Buermann star mark.
There is a near identical pair for sale on Ebay, that has both the anchor AND the star mark. If I read your site correctly, that means they were made after North and Judd acquired Buermann. But, does the lack of the star mark on my spurs mean they were made prior to the two companies merging? I am just curious how old they are…they are in beautiful condition and it would be hard to believe that they are that old.
Thanks!
Hi Kristy.
If the star brand marking is missing, then yes, it does sound as if they are pre-north and judd! Which will possibly make them older and more valuable!
I realize all are referring to spurs, but I purchased what I was told was a Buermann bit. There is no marking on it, other that the decorative engraving on the exterior shank. It is very rustic/crude looking. Did Buermann mark bits with the star also? Are there any governing characteristic of a Buermann bit? Any information you could supply me would be appreciated, or where I can find information. Thanks!!!
