Ricardo Spurs

ricardo spursRicardo spurs are not antiques and can be considered to be of a more contemporary or modern design and manufacturing process.  The Ricardo Metal Manufacturers company started making spurs in the 1930s in Denver, Colorado and then Victoria, Texas.

However, they are now considered to be one of the finest makers of Cowboy Spurs and their punchy spurs are highly collectible.

Often decorated with flower type motifs such as clovers, these steel or aluminium fancy spurs will make a great addition to any collection.

It is widely considered that Ed Newhagen, of the Ricardo company was the originator of the aluminum bit and although this process and metal was used to make spurs and other types of trap, it was not used for long - but not before it made him and the Ricardo company lots of money.

They also manufactured spurs made from steel, which were often mounted with bronze or silver over nickel plated brass.

Ricardo Spurs Markings and identification

ricardo spurs markingThe spurs were stamped in various different places with the word RICARDO or DON RICARDO (in script writing). Other spurs were stamped DON RICARDO and NICKEL SILVER.

Many items were made with inlayed Sterling silver on nickel plated brass shanks.  Others were made with bronze decorations over polished nickel.

Ricardo spurs are quite easy to buy from second hand sites such as eBay.  There are also many catalogs available to buy if you are interested in owning those too.

  1. I have 3 Don Ricardo aluminum hackamores and I can’t find anything about them. If you could steer me in the direction of where to find info on them and what they are worth I would greatly appreciate it.
