Cowboy Spurs 101

  1. Dear persons,

As a retired spur collector (amateur with only a few dozen spur styles), I am preparing to donate most to the Fred Oldfield Western Heritage Museum & Art Center (his daughter, my cousin runs it now) located at the Washington State Fairgrounds in Puyallup, and I have a question about labeling a couple of the spurs for her…

My antique Peruvian and Chilean gaucho spurs both have fancy leather heel covers or strapped protectors with solid ridges for the heavy ceremonial or parade spurs to set on (like some boots with heels that protrude under the back heel). Is there an official name for these tooled heel protectors?

    Thanks in advance,
    Tim Oldfield
